Group Exhibition 23-28.06.08
The exhibition shows a selection of contemporary short films, mixed-media installations, paintings and illustrations.
All of these works refer to another layer to reality than that which is lightly perceivable with the bare eye. In the course of this artwork, spoons are given their own identity, animals and human qualities are merged, grand emotions and common needs are blown up and allegorized.
When: 21-28 June 2008
Where: Rowan Humberstone Gallery
Participating artists: Anna Cady, Isa Tenhaeff, Jan-Kees van Kampen, Jessie Jermyn, Olivier Fournier and Paul Heard.
[In the posts below you will find more information on the work shown and the backgrounds of the artists]
Anna Cady
It revolves - there and not there.
Dimly we see the reflection of a person.
A ritual?
From below another spoon rears up.. They touch. Intimately. The sound is quite shocking - a tiny clang followed by a low moan as one drags over the other. (Japanese swords?)
In near silence they perform a gentle dance.
The person is tossed this way and that.
More spoons - Dance.
The person takes control. Peels them off, orders, gathers them - as one.
A sense of violence
A crescendo of sound.
A letting go…'
Isa Tenhaeff

Isa Tenhaeff studied Fine Art at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (BA) and Sociology of Culture at the University of Amsterdam (MASc). Since her move from Amsterdam to Cambridge mid 2006, Isa has worked as an artist, tutor and organiser of cultural events.Isa's paintings and drawings combine the traditional with the unconventional. Bound together by a seemingly effortless hand, her images take on an unreal and sometimes disturbing character as private observations are merged with visual experiment.

Jessie Jermyn
Jessie has lived in Cambridge most of her life, and has studied at the Hills Road Sixth Form College before heading off to Brighton. She will be commencing a foundation course in fine art at Brighton City College in September. Her illustrations and paintings, often drawn on scrap paper from the street, display surreal and slightly unsettling images of the interaction of humans and animals.
For the exhibition at the Rowan Jessie will be showing a selection of paintings and a joint mixed-media project with Olivier Fournier.
Olivier Fournier
Olivier Fournier lived in cambridge most of his life and studied at Hills Road Sixth Form College. Currently he is taking a BA in Contemporary Media Arts Practice in Brighton. His work explores a vast range of media. Olivier paints, draws, uses video projection and makes short films. Common themes include exploring the relationship between an artwork and the way it is viewed. 'Predictive Errors', a large installation, particularly explores the differences between the way we view painting and video.
Olivier will be showing two short films and two mixed media installations during the Cultural Night of 21.6.08, one of which is a collaboration with Jessie Jermyn.
